Meet the Artist: Philip Ma and Matthaus

Join artists Philip & Matthaus, whose works are featured in Wild!, and explore their drawing and sculpture techniques.

Since childhood Philip Ma has been fascinated with Disney characters, and spent hours drawing and painting human and animal characters. A few years ago he began more formal training in a private art studio, learning to use a variety of media. Philip believes that traditional art media and technology tools can work hand in hand to push his art to a different level of expression.

Philip Ma is a participant in the Independent Living Skills program at Abilities United. He earned a BFA in 3D Animation and Visual Effects from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Matthaus is a 21-year-old sculptor. His interest in sculpture dates from age 5; by age 9 he was making animals and imaginary creatures using paper, tissue paper, paper towels, plants, clay, and even food. He began to work in tin foil because it is more durable than paper, but flexible enough to “roam” around in his imaginary world. He also collects eraser crumbs and kneads them into lively animals and characters from animals, bugs, and dinosaurs to pre-historic beasts, humans, and imaginary creatures of all sorts. He enjoys giving his art to children and strangers to cheer them up.

Matthaus has a special talent for turning 2D pictures into 3D objects; he can make simple objects in just a few seconds and amazing creatures in minutes.

Reuse Muse: learn about the ancient art of encaustic (molten beeswax and tree resin) painting, and use repurposed materials to create fun mixed-media artwork with an emphasis on protecting and preserving the environment.

Shannon Amidon is an award-winning artist from San Jose, CA, who creates mixed media artwork primarily working in the ancient medium of encaustic painting. Using environmentally safe and sustainable practices is very important to her. She incorporates natural, upcycled and repurposed materials into her artwork, breathing new life into objects that would otherwise be destined for a landfill.
