San Francisco Opera presents a one-hour family film version of San Francisco Opera’s production of W.A. Mozart’s classic “The Magic Flute.” For this abridged version of one of Mozart’s finest and most whimsical efforts, the bird-catcher Papageno (Daniel Belcher) narrates the plot between arias in a fun, family-friendly format. The mystical realms of the opera are re-envisioned by renowned cartoonist and designer Gerald Scarfe “best known in the U.S. for his work on Disney’s Hercules, and his cartoons in The New Yorker magazine” with make- believe animals like “crocoguins,” “tigoons” and “giraffestritches.” Papageno accompanies the prince Tamino (Chad Freeburg) on a journey through an enchanting world to free his beloved Pamina, sung by former San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow Ji Young Yang.

There will be a live introduction by a SF Opera Teaching Artist!

Our new exhibit, Voyage to Vietnam: Celebrating the Tet Festival, opens today.

Children and their parents will delight in the opportunity to discover the beauty, sights, and sounds of Vietnam through the lens of Tet, the most important celebration of the year, in our newest original interactive exhibition.  Families will immerse themselves in Vietnamese culture, gain appreciation for the traditions, values, and daily experiences of people who live in Vietnam, and discover similarities and differences among the lives of children in the U.S. and in Vietnam. Dress up in customary Ao Dai and pose for an interactive family photo.  Try on a giant lion head mask and make and launch a fireworks display to signal the culmination of the celebration.
