Thomas & Friends®: Explore the Rails Opens

Thomas and Friends

The world’s most beloved #1 blue engine rolls into Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose this summer. Thomas & Friends®: Explore the Rails, an interactive exhibit created by Minnesota Children’s Museum and inspired by the popular children’s series on PBS KIDS in the US, and Treehouse and Télé-Québec in Canada, will steam into San Jose on May 20 through September 10.

Visitors to the 2500 square foot exhibit will be delighted as they find themselves surrounded by the Island of Sodor’s iconic locations: Knapford Station, Sodor Steamworks and much more. In the exhibit, children help Thomas and his friends solve a variety of challenges, from a simple sorting and shape identification activity to more complex engineering obstacles, such as completing a train track using track pieces with different levels of elevation. As children confront new challenges and test their abilities, the smiling faces of Thomas, Percy, Victor and others are there to offer encouragement and remind children how “really useful” they all are.

Meet the Artist – Jane Ruby

“Outback Spacehouse”

Earth Day is a day to think about how we can keep our planet healthy by reducing, reusing, and recycling. It is a day to think about how we can protect our animals and trees, conserve water and energy, reduce the tons of waste that we produce every year, and so much more! One way we can contribute is to fuse art and recycling together. Get hands-on with everyday materials and make recyclable art as you learn to protect our planet and spread environmental awareness.

Jane Ruby is a San Jose-based mixed-media artist who works with recyclable materials to make sculptures, paper goods, and other self-documented visual works that include non-fiction creative writing. Currently, she is in the Master’s Program in Linguistics for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at San Jose State University. She hopes to continue her passion of fusing art, culture, language, and education together.

Meet the Artist: Lillia Panighetti

Learn about Lillia’s art process and her passion for rescued furry friends all while helping her create the Dog City Shelter in the Art Loft. Create a community Dog City Mural, make dog portraits, help paint some giant cardboard dog houses, and more!

Lillia Panighetti graduated with a Bachelors in Fine Arts in pictorial arts from San Jose State University. She worked mainly as a figure painter, and experimented throughout her time as a student with various materials and media, using the human body as her main subject matter. She has worked with children with varied levels of skill and ability in many settings. She finds the process of discovery that a child embarks on when truly creating to be a remarkable experience she is honored to witness. Lillia resides in San Jose with her two rescue dogs, Rosie and Zeno.
