Pelvis

mammoth pelvis

Paleontologists found part of Lupe's pelvis. The pelvis is made up of three bones: the ilium, ischium and pubis (see diagram). Paleontologists found only a piece of Lupe's ilium.

Lupe's fossil

Lupe's pelvis being excavated and being cleaned up in the lab.

Lupe's ilium was found in many pieces. Paleontologists often have to piece together broken fossils. They use special glue to hold the pieces together. Once all the pieces are in place, they can identify what the bone is and begin to study it.

The pelvis can tell you a lot about the animal.
